So someone crazy enough actually wants to buy my sister’s Versa Note. You may think this is a good thing to get rid of the Versa. But there lies the problem.
See, when my dad told me to write the ad last year to put the Versa up for sale, I had no issue with that. I wanted it gone. But over the course of another year (roughly June 2014 when I wrote that ad to now), I noticed that I slowly started to have an emotional bond with it. You know, that kind of bond/love you have for your inevitably more awesome car? Yeah, I have that, except it’s towards a Versa.
I don’t know why I have an emotional attachment to it. Maybe because it’s so cheap that I couldn’t help but fall in love with how bad it was. All I know is that if this car ends up being sold, I’ll miss it greatly. And the last time a “family member” left this household, I couldn’t get over it.
Now here’s where part 2 of this problem comes in. If the Note ends up selling, I’ll have to deal with missing a “family member.” But, this car is worth something after all.
And of course, when you have extra cash, you naturally want to buy something good. So of course that leads to my dad and me to believing we need a sports car.
Now, to me I’ve always loved this as a achievable exotic.
But to my dad, he wants power. And that means he loves this for some reason.
To me, the 2016 Camaro has never really stuck in my mind as something I want. Something about it is off. Maybe it’s the interior, maybe it’s the styling, but overall it’s not something I’d like to see in the driveway.
My dad likes the Cayman too, but he likes the Camaro more, so what’s truly better to you, Oppo? (and if you have any other cars to suggest, post it)

Well, this has been my dream car since I was a child...
So I’m going with Camaro.

Buy the Versa off your sister if you want it for yourself and like it as much as you say you do. I’ve never seen a Camaro and a Porsche cross shopped before. Has he sat in a Camaro or test driven one? To me there is no comparison between the two, they are totally different types of cars aimed at totally different people. It would be like cross shopping the Versa with a S Class.

Honestly I’d rather have that than the new Camaro.

entertain him and let him sit in one. He’ll change his mind quick

Get one and fix it up and then I can live vicariously through you!

I’m pretty sure that if the car isn’t sold it’ll end up being passed down to me (it’s a complex story). My dad has driven a Camaro before. He liked it. I didn’t. He hasn’t driven a Cayman before, mainly because all the Porsche dealers are really far away from our house. You may think it’s weird to cross-shop these two cars but my dad and I cross-shop weird vehicles all the time (we cross-shopped a Mazda3 and an Accord once), simply because the cars in question have something unique about them. We don’t shop in segments as others might.

I would recommend that excellent idea but Kinja won’t let me.

Ah I see, well he should definitely sit in the Porsche and test drive it.

Weird. I can recommend you.
Anyways, depending on your car situation and living situation, it might be cool to get a fix’r’upper and work on it with your dad. My dad and I have kind of done that with his Tahoe, but $$$ always seems to be the limiting factor.
As far as the original comparo, I kind of get the cross shopping of those two. Actually, if I had a modest budget for a new car and no constraints, I’d probably be looking at these two as well. They are two really different approaches to a similar problem. The Camaro is all about brute force, while the Cayman is about finesse. But at the end of the day they are both sports cars.

I’d love to get a project car but my dad and I don’t have time and money for that. My dad has to go to meetings all the time and my sister’s in college. Also, my dad’s the type of person who wants things to just work.
I think you really got the cross-shopping thing down. I like the Cayman for that overall balance of power and handling, and my dad likes the Camaro for power.

Well the Camaro is no slouch in the handling department. It’s not going to be quite as good as the Cayman, but its not awful either. I think you’d probably end up enjoying either.

No doubt about that. The Camaro 1LE is already a beast. At this point to me, I feel I’m being picky, because I really just want some sort of speed.

How does selling a Versa Note somehow pay for a Cayman or Camaro?

Extra cash for the car.

I understand that by selling the Versa Note, you (your dad?) will have more money.
A Versa Note is a lot cheaper than a Cayman or Camaro. I’m curious how someone makes the leap from “I have whatever a Versa Note is worth burning a hole in my pocket,” to “I’m going to buy a Porsche!”
Unless you’re talking about using the money from selling the Versa Note as a down payment.

Well of course it’s not like my dad is going from a Note to a brand new Porsche. In this case we’ll be using the Demuro technique of depreciation (aka buying a used car).
And I’m sure the money from the Note will be used as a down payment.
But I’m sure none of this is happening because absolutely nobody will buy this Versa.
Sorry for not being so clear.

rear window looks too much like the 71-73 Mustang, which is fitting because it’s just as bloated

Cayman or Boxster.
If he absolutely has to go the muscle car route, please go Mustang!
